Mumbai, June 14:  The Internet seems to have become a playground for hackers. With confidential data stored on e-mail or personal contacts on your social network accounts, protecting passwords has assumed primary importance.
The recent LinkedIn password attack was an unfortunate event for many users and business professionals. Millions of passwords were leaked on the Internet leading to loss of confidence in the online business networking Website. Users of online dating site eHarmony also faced a similar attack. Cyber security experts said that the lack of adequate protections led to the theft of passwords.
Keeping the same password for a long time makes it easy for hackers to break into web accounts. Also, having the same password for multiple accounts is as bad. The key is to have alpha-numeric passwords.
Nowadays, multiple security options are available with e-mail account providers. For instance, Gmail has multiple layers of security. Gmail provides a two-step verification process. If this is activated, every time a user signs in – a unique code is sent to his/her mobile number. The user has to enter this pin in the box provided and then the user can sign-in. Many e-mail providers have credit card numbers and phone numbers as a part of the identification process before users sign in.
Facebook also has a security tool that captures the IP address of the place the user signs in from. If the account is accessed from another IP address, an e-mail is sent to the user. In this way, the user is alerted the unknown IP address.
There are password security android applications such as Keeper, aWallet and mSecure which can help users secure their pre-saved passwords, if their phones get stolen.
Password managers such as Keepass, Sxipper, RoboForm, Firefox's password manager are also available. These help users to organise passwords and secure logins.
