Ware House of Iron.

According to UNICEF  79 per cent of the children in the country below three years of age suffer from anemia caused by iron deficiency.  Over 30,000 farmers in the country have taken up cultivation of a new variety of pearl millet that is rich in iron. The variety was released for commercial use in Maharashtra last year.
Growers’ move to take up cultivation of the iron-rich pearl millet, marketed under the brand name Dhanashakti, is significant since they seem to have taken up the issue of iron deficiency leading to wide-spread anemia in the country.
In guidelines for control of anemia issued earlier this year, UNICEF said that India is one of the countries where there is high prevalence of anemia.
Sixty per cent of women aged between 15 and 49 are anemic due to iron deficiency.
According to the Food Policy institute, a study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that pearl millet, called kambu in Tamil and bajra in Hindi, bred containing more iron could provide young children with their daily iron needs.
According to Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute, results from a study under the Harvest Plus Programme indicate that children could get their full daily iron needs from just 100 grams of flour derived from this pearl millet variety.
Pearl millet is an important staple food in semi-arid regions in the country, where iron deficiency is widespread.  Lack of iron affects mental development and increases fatigue. Severe anemia, due to iron deficiency, increases the risk of women dying during childbirth.
A study conducted among iron-deficient children showed that traditional food varieties such as up-puma and roti made from the new pearl millet variety helped them absorb more iron than from an ordinary millet variety. The additional zinc content also took care of the children’s daily zinc needs. Zinc shortage among children could lead to stunted growth and make them prone to common infections.
The research team was led by Michael Hambidge, Pediatrics Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado in Denver. Hambridge said that the results of the study offer a potentially important, strategy to battle malnutrition.
On the Indian side, Bhalchandra Kodkany of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College was the principal investigator.
The journal also said that a study conducted on marginally iron-deficient Beninese women found that they absorbed twice the amount of iron from this nutrition-tailored pearl millet.  is significant since they seem to have taken up the issue of iron deficiency leading to wide-spread anemia in the country.

The Seven Health symptoms never be ignored.

 1: Severe toothache.

While many of us tend to experience tooth sensitivities when we tuck into our favourite ice cream or enjoy a cold drink, if you're experiencing more sensitivity than usual, you need to go for a cavity check. Severe toothache can indicate that your tooth's nerve has become damaged; a common side-effect of rotting teeth. If you ignore this health problem, you could end up with an infected nerve as the bacteria spread around your mouth - ouch! A filling will solve the problem if the nerve hasn't already become infected, whereas a root canal may be necessary if the infection has spread to other areas. Seek attention from your dentist as soon as possible.

2: Daily bloated stomach in ladies.

We've felt like an over-inflated balloon more times than we can count on two pairs of hands and feet - it's not uncommon to feel like you've over-indulged every now and again, particularly before your period. If you notice gas, severe abdominal pain, difficulty eating, or all of the aforementioned on a daily basis, it's worth paying a visit to a medical professional who can either put your mind at ease by giving you the all-clear or refer you on to a gynaecologic oncologist for scans and treatment if necessary.
Milk: Remember how your mother would force you to have 2 glasses of milk every day when you were a child? She would do it for a number of good reasons. Milk is extremely rich in calcium and also aids ... more
3: Intense and sudden headaches.

Sudden headaches that feel like no pain you’ve ever experienced before could be a sign of a ruptured aneurysm – a burst blood vessel in the brain that requires immediate attention. Other symptoms that go hand-in-hand with a worryingly bad headache include chest pain, exhaustion and loss of vision, which could be signs of cardiac cephalgia or meningitis. If you’ve been experiencing intense headaches that appear out of nowhere, make sure you seek advice from your doctor to catch any potential health problems as soon as possible.
 4: Chest pain.

Many of us suffer from chest pain every now and again, particularly if we’ve enjoyed a delightful spicy dish the previous evening (yum!). How do you know when chest pain becomes something more serious than just plain heartburn though? The answer is that you probably don’t without seeking medical attention. However, pressure on your chest – often described as feeling like an elephant sitting on you – or upper abdominal pain are just two of many signs of a heart attack. If you’re ever in any doubt, the doctor is always the best person to see.
5: Excessive body hair on women.

While both men and women grow hair all over their bodies, it’s unusual for women to sprout coarse hairs on their face, chest, stomach or around their nipples. If you find hair in places that aren’t typical of the female body, visit your doctor as this may be a sign of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS tends to develop when there is an imbalance of female hormones and can lead to irregular periods and infertility. If in doubt, get it checked out!

6: Unexplained weight loss.
While you may diet and exercise in a conscious bid to lose weight, if you start losing more weight than you usually would or you’ve been losing weight without exercising or dieting, this could be a sign of something more serious. Indeed, unexplained weight loss can indicate that an illness is manifesting itself in your body, and may be a sign of diabetes, malnourishment, or a number of other dangerous health problems. All cases of unexplained weight loss should be evaluated by a medical professional to check for serious health complications.
7: Erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction can ruin more than just your sex life. Other negative side effects commonly associated with the problem of not being able to achieve or maintain an erection include depression and an increased risk of heart disease. Men are notorious for ignoring health symptoms: “Why do I need to visit the doctor about my broken wrist? Just stick some duct tape around it and I’ll be fine”.  Gentlemen, while it’s great to look on the bright side of life, you must take any health symptoms – such as the above – seriously; it could save your life!

Use mosquito Raquets(bats) and save from fever attack

B. Desikan, a VI standard student, has found a new passion — killing mosquitoes using battery-powered tennis racquet-shaped swatters.

Whenever he swings the racquet, he rejoices when he hears a sizzle and sees a mosquito drop to the ground.
CHINESE RACQUETS:
His mother, however, rues this new passion as he spends more time chasing mosquitoes than playing outside.

Keeping  him  happy are the Chinese mosquito-slaying racquets that are a big hit among Chennaites.

It’s the season when mosquitoes are swarming the city and Chinese companies have cashed in by flooding the market with these racquets.

At New Hindustan Electronics, a small shop on buzzing Ritchie Street which teems with shops hawking all manner of electronic goods, swarms of buyers come for Chinese mosquito racquets. The price ranges from Rs 125 to Rs 250, he said.

“There is no home in the city without a Chinese racquet ,” says M. D. G. Khalefuthullah, owner of the shop.

The Hunter mosquito racquet manufactured in Coimbatore is the only alternative to Chinese ones. However, due to the prevailing power shortage, the company is unable to keep up supplies allowing the Chinese ones to dominate, says Khalefuthullah.

With Chennai beginning to get warmer and mosquitoes losing their sting, the demand for racquets has declined sharply for Khalefuthullah, who now sells around ten a day compared to over 100 during the rainy season.

It is not only the racquets that are in big demand. Meshes for windows and mosquito repellents are also in great demand.
MESH PROTECTION:
Suresh Kumar, owner of Net & Fix, a dealer for the Netlon brand of meshes, says the demand for Netlon has surged this year over the last year due to the fear of dengue. Netlon is no longer a luxury, it has become a necessity in Chennai, he says.

Net & Fix services 5-10 homes each day. The peak demand is during the rainy season (April-May and August/September). According to a spokesperson from Dabur India, which owns the Odomos brand of mosquito repellents, the demand for Odomos has been on the rise to protect from mosquitoes that cause dengue, chikungunya and malaria. While not disclosing numbers, he says it has resulted in a sales spurt for the brand.

Odomos, which controls a lion’s share of 85 per cent of the mosquito repellent cream market in India, is today available in five formats — cream, lotion, gel, spray and oil.

“Consumers are becoming more aware of the long-term ill-effects of using insecticide-based repellents like coils, mats, liquid vapourisers which are harmful to inhale.

So, people are now increasingly shifting to applying products like Odomos,” says the spokesperson.

As the owner of a Chennai provision store says, anything to do with repellents, racquets, coils, vapourisers, creams is flying off the shelves faster than the mosquitoes can.

Functions and Protection of our-Liver.

Functions:
Suck in the bad and spit out the good.
"The liver has many important functions that keeps a person healthy. It removes harmful material from the bloodstream and helps digest food,"
The liver, weighing in at an average of three pounds, is a rubbery and reddish-brown organ that sits on the right side of your stomach.
A functioning liver works as our bodies' fat-burning organ: It converts nutrients from the food we eat into  essential blood components, storing vitamins and minerals and producing proteins and enzymes to maintain hormone balances in our bodies. Our livers also help our immune system fight infections, remove bacteria from the blood and make bile, which is essential for digesting our meals.
Problems with your liver can be inherited or can occur if your body is infected by any viruses or harmful chemicals. Mistreating your liver can raise the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, allergies and many other ailments.

"Although the immune system protects our body from many dangers, it is the liver that protects the immune system from becoming overloaded," .
Protection and  safegaurding:
Avoiding an excessive consumption of tobacco, alcohol, coffee and white sugar and adding in low impact exercises (like daily walks) and drinking lots of water are all ways to ensure good liver health.

Eating 10 fresh foods helps to keep your liver healthy:
Garlic:
Garlic helps your liver activate enzymes that can flush out toxins. It also has a high amount of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing says holistic nutritionist Hermeet Suri.
Grapefruit:
Eating or drinking grapefruit juice can help your liver flush out carcinogens and toxins. This fruit is also high in both vitamin C and antioxidant properties.
Beets:
Beets are high in plant-flavonoids, which can improve the overall functions of your liver.
Leafy Greens:
Leafy greens like spinach and lettuce have the ability to neutralize metals, chemicals and pesticides that may be in our foods, and act as a protective mechanism for the liver.
Green Tea:
Green tea is full of plant antioxidants known as catechins, which have been known to improve the functions of our liver.
Avocados:
Adding more avocados to your diet can help your body produce a type of antioxidant called glutathione, which is needed for our livers to filter out harmful materials.
cruciferous vegetables:
Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts also increase the amount of glucosinolate (organic compounds) in our bodies that helps create enzyme production for digestion.
Lemons:
We all know citrus fruits like lemons are full of vitamin C, but lemons also help our bodies cleanse out toxic materials and aid the digestion process.
Turmeric:
Used as a spice, tumeric has been known to help our bodies digest fats and stimulate the production of bile. It can also act as a natural form of detox for your liver.
Walnuts:
Walnuts are also high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids, which help support our liver through its cleansing process.
