Health in your Hands-Mudras.

The Universe is composed of five elements, earth, air, water, fire, and ether. Similarly our body is also a union of five elements which is represented by our five fingers. Hand mudras regulate these five elements in our body and How to perform hand mudras are given below in details.

1.The thumb for Fire;
2.The index (Jupiter finger) for Air;
3.The middle (Saturn finger) for Ether or Space;
4.The ring (Sun finger) for Earth;
5.The pinky (Mercury finger) for Water. (See also the Reflexlology Foot Chart.)

The under mentioned mudras can done by each and every body even though they seems to be in good health condition and also no age limit.This can be done once or twice in a week if you are in good health condition.This leads to live healthy and happily. The list of mudras are given with picture and necessary demonstrations.Let us try how to do hand mudras.
Mudras in general are actions of hands and fingers that can be performed at any time in any way, like sitting, standing, walking or travelling. So there's no need to devote a special time to perform a mudra, but the maximum benefit is by doing it in sitting posture, especially in sukhasana (easy pose), vajrasana, or padmasana. (See photos, L to R.) If you have constriants of time you can even perform them in instalments.



 

Timing and duration for mudras.
In the initial phase mudras should be performed for at least 10 minutes and then can be extended to 30 minutes to 1 hour. It is not necessary to leave all your normal work for 1 hour to perform mudras as it can be done at any time, any place, and in any posture, even if you can't perform all at one stretch you can practise in 2-3 instalments.
Mudras are very powerful. If practised regularly, you'll experience the health benefits.
Prayer Pose.

1. Gyan Mudra:

Increases memory power and sharpens the brain
Enhances concentration and prevents Insomnia
When practised regularly, it will relieve psychological disorders like Hysteria, Anger and Depression





2. Prithvi Mudra:


How and when: Touch the tip of the thumb and the tip of the ring finger together, keeping the other three fingers straight. Make sure you do not force the fingers to be straight, only try to keep them so. It is always a better option to do mudra practice with both hands, although it is not a rule.

     This mudra is preferably practiced in the morning, but can be performed any time of the day and for any duration. This mudra should be done when you feel dull or are lacking energy, enthusiasm and motivation in life. Perform this mudra with both hands by sitting in sukhasan (cross-legged) or padmasana (lotus position), keeping the backs of the hands on the knee and the elbows straight.

Benefits:
• Helps boost the blood circulation
• Increases tolerance and patience
• Helps in meditation
• Since this mudra is an association of the earth element with the powerful Sun, it brings solidity to the body.
• Assists in weight gain if the body is weak or too lean
• Helps restore the balance and equilibrium of the body
• Wards off weakness, fatigue and dullness and increases prana in the body
• Increases and brightens the aura
• Activates the thinking power and helps to broaden the orthodox/conservative thinking pattern
• Compensates for a lack of rajasic guna (passion)
3. Varuna Mudra.  

    How and when: You may perform this mudra at any time of the day in a sitting, standing or lying down position, although the best pose is sitting cross-legged. Join the little fingertip with the tip of the thumb, keeping the rest of the fingers straight.
Caution: Do not press the tip of the little finger near the nail as it causes dehydration rather than hydrating the system.



Benefits:
• As the name suggests, this mudra is associated with the water element (Varun is a name for the water god), so it balances the water element in the body.
• Since it moisturizes the body, it is also a thirst-quenching mudra, which activates the salivary glands to secrete saliva.
• Relieves dehydration and stomach infection
• Relieves kidney malfunctioning and promotes urination
• Activates the circulation of fluids in the body
• Excellent for skin disorders such as wrinkles, skin infections and dryness
• Purifies the blood and heals many blood disorders
• Brings luster and glow to the body, especially the face
• Compensates for the shortage of water in the body
• Releases constipation
4. Vayu Mudra .


How and when: To perform the mudra, fold the index finger to the base of the thumb, and press the back of second phalange with the thumb. Keep the other three fingers reasonably straight. You can perform this mudra in any sitting, standing, lying down position or when walking. You can perform it any time of the day, irrespective of an empty or full stomach.
Caution: This mudra works in peaks and valleys (it decreases, then increases the air element). Therefore, once you achieve the desired benefit, stop the practise.
Benefits: 
• Releases excess wind from the stomach and other parts of the body, releasing aches and pains and acting as first aid
Relieves Rheumatism, Arthritis, Gout, Parkinson's disease and paralysis without any medicine
Useful for Cervical Spondilytis, paralysis of the face, and pressure on nerves in neck
Relieves gas pressure in the stomach
 5.Shunya Mudra or Aakash mudra (ether element)


How and when: Join the tip of the middle finger with the tip of the thumb, keeping the rest of the three fingers straight. You may perform this mudra any time of the day for any duration. The best time is morning while sitting in sukhasan or padmasana. Try to hold this mudra for 45 minutes, though you may start with a shorter time period, depending on convenience and capacity.
Benefits:
• This mudra is a combination of the ether element with the sun and pertains to any ailment involving sound. It is excellent for increasing the sensitivity to hear sounds.
• Activates the calcium and phosphorus absorption from the diet and also their formation, which makes it a very good mudra for those having weakness of bone, such as osteoporosis
• Due to its inherent quality to release tension, it keeps the mind calm and serene and can be used during meditation.
• Successful in releasing lockjaw experienced through yawning, mental tension or over-exertion
• Regular practise calms and clarifies the thought process.
 6.Surya Mudra ]

How and when: 
Fold the ring finger to the base of thumb and press it with the thumb at the second phalange. Keep the rest of the three fingers straight. Hold for at least 15 minutes at a stretch, and practise two to three times daily for best results. Practise this mudra on an empty stomach and in a sitting position only.
Caution: Never perform this mudra on a full stomach. Discontinue the mudra in case of acidity, heartburn or indigestion.
Benefits:
• Helps dissolve extra body fat by balancing the metabolic rate; prevents and controls obesity
• Burns excess phlegm
• Compensates for sluggish digestion
• Helps to increase body strength
• Reduces tension
• Lowers cholesterol levels
• Provides heat and energy to the body (excellent to do in winter)
• Decreases earth element in the body
Reduces cholesterol in body and helps in reducing weight
Reduces anxiety

7. Prana Mudra .

Improves immunity
Improves the power of the eyes and reduces eye related issues
Relieves vitamin deficiency and fatigue








8. Apana Mudra.(Mudra of Digestion)


Method: 
The tips of middle finger and ring finger touch the tip of thumb while the other two fingers are stretched out.
Specialty:

Time duration: 
Practise daily for 45 minutes, but practising for longer period yields more benefits.

9 Apana Vayu Mudra.


Method: 
The tips of the middle finger and ring finger touch the tip of thumb, while the index finger touches the base of thumb and the little finger is stretched out.
Speciality: 
Benefits the heart and works like an injection in the reduction of heart attack. It is as powerful as a sorbitate tablet. Reduces the gas content in body.
Time duration: 
Practice as many times as you can. Heart patients and BP patients can practise twice for 15 minutes daily for better results.

Strengthens the heart and regularises palpitation
Regulates excretory system
Relieves gastric issues
10 Linga Mudra  .

Stops production of phlegm and gives power to lungs
Relieves severe cold and bronchial infections
Invigorates the body .
